Teaching Your Child About Diabetes
A diabetes diagnosis can be as scary for your son or daughter as it is for you. It's a good idea to talk to your child about how he or she is feeling, and ask about his or her specific fears. Then take the opportunity to learn together about what diabetes is, how it will affect your family and how to manage it. You can enlist the help of your child's doctor or diabetes educator in explaining diabetes and diabetes management in words your child can understand.
As your child grows up, he or she will gradually grow into the responsibility of taking charge of his or her own diabetes management. Ask your child to be your special helper now so he or she begins to take an active role in his or her own health. Remember, your goal is to help your child become as strong, healthy and confident as possible.
